In celebration of Pepeluali (February) being 'Ōlelo Hawaiʻi month, we were inspired to dust off some of our puke ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and first come across our copy of Kamehameha The Great by Julie Steward Williams. We immediately fell in love with the section titled: Hae Hawaiʻi on page 102-103. And it read:
"I ka makahiki 1794, ua hāʻawi akula ʻo Vanekouwa i kekahi hae Pelekania iā Kamehameha. No nā makahiki he iwakāluakūmālua i welo ai ka hae ma na wahi like ʻole o Kamehameha i noho ai. I ka makahiki 1816, ua hana ʻia ka hae Hawaiʻi mua loa. Hoʻohālikelike ʻia nā kaha ʻewalu no nā mokupuni nui ʻewalu o ka paeʻāina. A ua koho ʻia paha ka Union Jack mai ka hae Pelekania e Kamehameha no kona manaʻo aia ʻo Hawaiʻi ma lalo o ka malu o ke aupuni Pelekane Nui." -JSW
"In 1794 Captain Vancouver gave Kamehameha a British flag. For twenty-two years Kamehameha flew that flag wherever he was living at the time. In 1816 he had a Hawaiian flag designed. The eight stripes stood for the eight main islands. The Union Jack from the British flag may have been chosen because Kamehameha felt that the islands were under Great Britain’s protection." - JSW
Our Palaka Hae Hawaiʻi print honors the renown symbol that represents us to the world, Hawaiʻi. E ola Hawaiʻi.
