"He ālialia paʻakai, he ālialia manu, nā ālialia o nā waipuna huʻihuʻi, it is a salt bed, a salt bed for birds, salt-encrusted places with cool springs." Honoring the once flourishing ālialia paʻakai of Keālia, Waikapū, Maui, we can only dream of revisiting these salt beds through the moʻoʻōlelo told by our kūpuna. As a child Hoʻomalu grew up visiting this special place often, despite the absence of the salt beds, it remained home to the ālialia manu Aeʻo and the waipuna huʻihuʻi. Paʻakai was a huge resource for our poʻe Hawaiʻi, not only used to garnish food but heavely used to preserve iʻa and iʻo so no food would go wasted or spoiled. As we reflect on what once was, we remain grateful for all of the kumuwaiwai (resources) our poʻe Hawaiʻi utilized in the ahupuaʻa system.
